History details
Found in 1927-28 at Nālandā, north verandah of Monastery Site 1 near the copper plate of Devapāla. May be genuine or an ancient forgery/copy. At some point of its discovery the plates were chemically treated to remove patina. #Bhandarkar_1981:224 says that according to #Ghosh_1939-40 some portions had been more legible before this treatment. I see no such claim in #Ghosh_1939-40; in any case, according to #Bhandarkar_1981:225, "the inscription had already suffered considerably in lines 4-6, and particularly in line 7 in the effacement of letters when it was examined, but after chemical treatment these lines, and especially line 7, developed actual perforations."
