First noticed by Prinsep in 1834. Presently in situ at the Qutub Complex in Mehrauli; original location (called Viṣṇupada giri in the inscription) unknown. Local tradition holds it was erected by Anaṅgapāla Tomara (early 8th century). #Fleet_1888:141 records small metal pieces "like bits of bar iron" in its foundation which suggest the present location may in fact be the original one. However, Bhandarkar (1981:258-259) observes that the pillar may have been moved along with its original foundation, as was the Delhi Aśoka pillar. Bhandarkar (1981:58-61) further theorises that the original site of the pillar was along the Vipāśā and also summarises other opinions.
